Aria
A jewelry set that senses and stops panic attacks.
Tasked with designing a forward-thinking wearable that redefines human-technology interaction, this anxiety-management device introduces a new approach to mitigating panic attacks.
According to the World Health Organization, in 2019 over 300 million people had a diagnosed anxiety disorder, making it the most common disorder worldwide.
This wearable technology jewelry uses the box breathing technique to detect and interrupt panic attacks. The ring gently lights up to the breathing pattern, while the pendant vibrates in sync, helping users to center themselves and return their breathing to a normal pace.
Project Intention
Traditional anxiety management methods can be difficult to access and may not offer immediate relief. Many existing solutions are not discreet, making it challenging for individuals to use them without attracting attention. Additionally, the lack of real-time breathing pattern monitoring complicates self-regulation, leaving individuals feeling powerless during a crisis.
Objective: To design an everyday wearable device that helps prevent panic attacks and monitors the breathing patterns of individuals with anxiety to enhance their mental well-being.

Understanding Panic Attacks
A panic attack is a sudden feeling of intense fear that comes on quickly. It can cause symptoms such as fast heartbeat, trouble breathing, and dizziness. These attacks can happen without warning and often make people feel like they are losing control or in danger.
The cause:
Panic attacks can occur due to elevated oxygen levels in the bloodstream.
Over-breathing leads to a decrease in carbon dioxide levels, resulting in excessive oxygen and feelings of dizziness.
Hyperventilation can induce chest pain by constricting blood vessels.
The release of adrenaline accelerates heart rate, resulting in sharp chest pains that may mimic a heart attack.
The symptoms:
Sweating
Rapid breathing
Racing heartbeat
Feeling of fear
Intense and constant worrying
Sense of doom
Clasping of hands
Palm sweating
Chest tightness
Tunnel vision
Lightheadedness
Regulating breathing is Key
Breathing regulation is essential for preventing and stopping panic attacks, as it activates the parasympathetic nervous system and promotes relaxation.
User interviews were conducted with individuals who have anxiety disorders to understand how they currently manage panic attacks.
One in three participants reported using the box breathing method to regulate their breathing. Others mentioned distracting themselves by focusing on an object in their surroundings or reaching for a sensory object to help with their distraction.

Product Ideation
Designing a wearable device that discreetly alerts you to potential panic attacks, helps regulate breathing, and is comfortable for everyday wear.
How it works
The Aria jewelry set is designed for everyday wear, monitoring breathing and heart rate to help prevent panic attacks. If an attack occurs, the ring lights up to the box-breathing pattern while the pendant vibrates in sync, guiding the wearer’s focus. This coordinated response helps calm and regulate breathing, easing the intensity of the attack.
Aria Smart Jewelry
Discreet and effective
The Aria jewelry set is discreet and blends into daily wear. Its sensors detect irregular breathing and heart rate to identify early signs of a panic attack. When triggered, the ring and pendant guide calming breaths, quickly easing symptoms without disrupting the user’s environment.
Calm, Compact, and Collected
The device charges wirelessly by placing the jewelry pieces in the compact charging case. The case itself is USB-C compatible and includes an attachable loop, allowing it to be hooked onto a carabiner or backpack for easy portability.
