Skullcandy x SCADpro: Gen Z’s “Send it!” Speaker Family

Intro This collaborative studio with Skullcandy Inc. challenged 22 students and me across multiple majors to design for Gen Z board sport enthusiasts and music-loving thrill seekers. The speakers needed to be durable, innovative, and embody the Skullcandy brand ethos.
Role & Team I served as CMF (Colors, Materials, Finishes) Lead, working with a team of 5 designers to create several colorways and pattern options paired with engaging texture combinations to develop a compelling story behind each speaker design.
Process
Deep research went into understanding the cultural zeitgeist of board culture and Gen Z to uncover what resonates with them right now and how we could translate those insights into a speaker design. Specifically for the CMF Design Team, we spent a lot of time creating separate aesthetics for as many different styles as we possibly could. We encapsulated each vibe into its own moodboard “universe” and then crowned each one with a fun made up name that we felt best captured the aesthetic. (Punkthorn core for life! 🤟🎀🛹)
Outcome
The result was 3 unique speakers, 6 different CMF universes, and one accompanying app, creating a speaker option for every lifestyle and every unique individual.
